Heavenly hellebores chosen by plant hunter Beth Corbett
It’s little wonder hellebores are one of the most popular winter-flowering plants. In medieval times, they were said to be planted next to the front door to break bad spells and curses, but today they are known for their unsurpassed winter beauty.
Commonly known as the ‘Lenten rose’, the hellebore’s large, nodding blooms are like those on a rose, appearing above glossy, clumpforming, evergreen foliage from late winter to early spring. Thriving in cold weather, they can even be seen flowering in the snow. The flowers are a welcome early source of nectar for pollinators at a time of year when it is scarce.
Preferring a shady position, they are ideal for lighting up dark areas of the garden. Easy to grow and maintain, they are also rabbit and deer-resistant. Fully hardy perennials.
Height and spread 35cm.
