Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Saturday, January 1.
Klopp gives squad Covid update
Coronavirus has plagued the world in 2021 and football has felt the full force of the disease over the past few weeks.
With positive cases rising during the winter months, games up and down the country have been postponed.
Liverpool saw their Boxing Day fixture against Leeds United called off but with new positive cases at Anfield, manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has no current plans to ask for the New Year’s Day tie against second-placed Chelsea to be postponed.
“We have three new COVID cases in the team and a few more in the staff,” said Klopp. “So it’s not so cool at the moment.”
Bring back Gini
Gini Wijnaldum left in the summer after five years at Anfield.
Despite leaving for what was assumed, at the time, more playing time and playing alongside Lionel Messi, Neymar Jnr and Kylian Mpabbe for Paris Saint-Germain, the move hasn’t quite worked out for the Dutch midfielder.
Wijnaldum has barely featured and is rumoured to want to leave after only six months in paris.
The Reds have been told to bring him back, given they never really replaced him.
