Lord Sugar brands TV critic ‘idiot’ for calling new series of The Apprentice ‘boring’


Lord Alan Sugar branded one TV critic an “idiot” when he claimed BBC viewers were “getting bored” of watching the Apprentice as its 16th series gets underway.

The 74-year-old businessman has spoken out about the new series of the reality show after as the latest instalment was hounded with criticism after just two weeks on air.

Over the past few weeks, contestants on the BBC One show have been regularly ridiculed by viewers at home for the bad decisions they made on the programme.

But now, the TV host has hit back at critics as he admits the new set of 16 ambitious entrepreneurs are under a lot of pressure to succeed on the show.

Following the latest slew of backlash, Lord Sugar took to Twitter to voice his opinions about the criticisms he has faced online.

His main frustration on Saturday afternoon was that a new article released by The Independent allegedly stated that viewers are “getting bored” of the show.

But the business mogul was quick to shut down these claims as he revealed the latest viewing figures to his loyal legion of fans online.

He wrote “[One] ace reporter from the Independent wrote people are getting bored of @bbcapprentice. In fact, the viewing figures are the highest in 6 years.

“This type of idiot makes me sick they don’t do their research of the facts before they open their ignorant mouths.”

It comes after the dad-of-three appeared on The One Show to slam those who criticise the candidates, saying there’s no way they’d do any better as he quipped, they’d “drop dead” within five minutes in the boardroom.

He told viewers at home: “We’ve been on air for 16 years and I know my most frequently asked question is, ‘Why don’t these people learn?’ Now, the thing is – they’re under extreme pressure.

“They all want to win, every single one of them wants to win so their brains are all over the place. They’re arguing with each other, everyone tries to one up each other.”

He added: “All I can say is, that all the commentators we see on Twitter, on social media, saying what a bunch of useless idiots.”

“I’d like to get those people and stick them in my boardroom for half an hour and they will all drop dead I can promise you that. It’s very easy to criticise but there’s a lot of pressure.

“The good news is – as the time goes by, then learn. That’s the good thing about The Apprentice. Watch it as it’s going through and the cream rises to the top at the end.”

The Apprentice airs on Thursdays on BBC One at 9pm.
