Man breaks into Co-op through ceiling, threatens staff and steals cash

A man broke into a Co-op store through a ceiling before threatening staff and stealing cash.

The incident happened at the shop and petrol station on Manchester Road in Astley, Wigan, just after 3pm on Sunday (January 2).

Police said a man got in through the ceiling to the main office and threatened the staff inside.

He then fled the scene with a quantity of cash.

No arrests have been made, GMP said.

An investigation is ongoing and anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has any footage from the area, is being urged to get in touch.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: “Police were called just after 3pm on Sunday 2 January to reports of a robbery at a Co-op on Manchester Road in Astley.

“A man had reportedly entered the store through the ceiling to the main office, threatened staff and left with a quantity of cash.

“Officers attended, no arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone who may have seen anything or have DashCam or CCTV footage of the area, please contact police via LiveChat on our website, or call 101 quoting log number 1493 of 02/01/22.

“Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
