Manchester City are considering a summer transfer window swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.
That is according to a report by El Nacional who claim that the midfielder, who joined Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2012, is currently locked in a contract stand-off with the Spanish heavyweights.
Modric is out-of-contract at the Bernabeu in the summer of 2023 and, despite now being at the age of 36, remains a key part of Madrid’s plans, explaining why they are so keen to keep hold of him beyond the end of next season.
However, with frustration mounting on both sides of the negotiation table, it is becoming more and more possible that failure to agree terms on a new deal for the veteran will see him leave the club in the summer, with City, according to the report, waiting to pounce.
Modric is held in significantly high regard at Madrid, but the club’s policy of only handing out one-year contract extensions at a time to players over the age of 30 years old has frustrated Modric, with it now claimed that City are looking to seize on the opportunity.
Despite being well-stocked in central-midfield, uncertainty continues to surround midfield-enforcer Fernandinho’s future, with the Brazilian out-of-contract at the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Should he not put pen to paper on fresh terms at the club, it will, of course, leave City a man light, potentially forcing them to hunt elsewhere for reinforcements.
Since joining Madrid almost ten years ago, Modric has made 411 appearances for Madrid, scoring 28 goals and grabbing 66 assists.
Meanwhile, staying in Spain, City are ‘keeping a close eye’ on highly-rated Barcelona sensation Gavi, a report by El Nacional, as cited by Marca, claims.
The 17-year-old starlet, who is considered as one of the most promising footballers in the world, rose to fame last season, producing a string of fine displays for Barcelona, before starring for Spain in the finals of the UEFA Nations League in October.
Despite his tender age, the midfielder is already showing tremendous signs of potential and quality, with him already being compared to the likes of former Barcelona stars Andreas Iniesta and Xavi.
It is reported that City manager Pep Guardiola is a huge fan of his talents and would like to lure him to the Premier League.
However, the €50million release clause within the youngster’s contract could make life difficult.
